very very meaningful post. but i am somewhat disappointed as the horizontal scroll bar and the relation between how people browse for shoes in a shoe store. People have always read from left to right, unless you are catering the audience in the Middle East.

Just like nearly everyone else, I couldn’t stop laughing at the tables bit.
Sometimes you just have to use tables, use colour and try and find unique ways to keep people intrigued with your own/client web site….. YEAH!!

any insight on how to effectively use CSS? what about writing CSS that degrades gracefully? it will be a great way to designing SE Optimized pages that will rank higher in SERPs.

Interesting (and yes, the tables one is very funny-ish). However, on some of these, the “different colour for background and font” and the “mystery navigation” for example, you claim “it works”. But it what sense does it “work”? In a design sense or a usability sense? You imply it’s the latter, but where’s the evidence that unintuitive navigation doesn’t just get in the way or that people with disabilities find poor colour contrast manageable on sites like Linksys?

Yes, I agree with you that sleepyhero.com is not a very nice site. I’m hoping to redesign it soon. I’ve learned a lot since I created it.

Thank you for your thoughts. My hope is that people will challenge these “rules” but also that people will challenge me. Comments like yours are definitely my favourite. They definitely add to the article.
