Infrared photography produces some of the most amazing photographs on the planet.

In infrared photography, the film or image sensor used within a digital camera is sensitive to infrared lighting, which allows the camera to pick up any light that’s invisible to the human eye.

Objects that are normally bright in visible light look dark, while normally dark objects look especially bright.

In most cases, an infrared filter is used which lets the infrared light to pass through to the camera.

In this article, we’ll take a look at 100 inspirational examples of infrared photography that are sure to both inspire and amaze you.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, some of these shots are worth a thousand pictures.

    Incredibly Beautiful

    Thanks for sharing.

A SLR (reflex) converted to infrared. As the digital sensors in the modern cameras are natively more sensible to IR than visible light, a IR filter is placed immediately in front of the sensor to allow only the visible light to reach it.

To convert a camera to IR, this filter is replaced by a visible light filter that will reject everything but IR. Depending on the cutoff frequency of the filter (the wavelength where the reduction begins), the picture might contain color or not. This color is said to be false, as it does not reflect in any way the real color of the subject.

Roger Cicala, from lensrentals.com, summarized the process in this article : [http://www.lensrentals.com/news/2009.05.02/introduction-to-ir-photography].

In a film camera, you need special infrared film that only picks up the infrared light. You can point and shoot like regular film, but only infrared light is captured.

In a digital camera, you can use filters that block all (or nearly all) visible light, allowing only infrared light into the camera. The process is different from film for two reasons: 1) not all digital camera sensors can “see” infrared light, and 2) because you have an incredibly dark filter on your lens, you must set up the shot before you put the filter on, and use a long exposure (several seconds) in order to get enough light in the photo.

Most of the images in this list have been colored in post-processing. Infrared photography is usually monochrome.

As usual you’ve found a tremendous collection of stunning photos… Some of them are beautiful. I don’t even know how to take and infr-red photo, or edit one to be infr-red in Photoshop.

Well, technically and compositionally exceptional photos. But really the majority of the shots were washed out and lacked contrast. I would love to PhotoShop some of those gorgeous images into photos that will not seem passe after viewing 20 or so.

Back in the analog days Infrared was an awesome change to color and b&w, now its moot.

    Awesome site!
