one of the best things about the new site is the overall balance of the page. it’s really well balanced. very good design. as pointed out in the post the Hot Topics should had been put in a more prominent place.

The developers basically lifted the reset.css from Blueprint and modified it, then added all their custom CSS after it. So it’s not really based on Blueprint, but it’s nice to know they took a snippet.

The new design is better then the previous one, but still i think there is a lot of potential to improve.

I really dislike the new website. Every time I try to go to a particular story, the whole page starts scrolling me back to the ad at the top! It may be a good visual design but the usability is POOR. Pop up ads galore. I prefer news.

Good post!

Definitely get overwhelmed when visiting the site. I am sure the biz requirements has every department trying to get on the home page so they set the font extremely small to fit within that real estate.

I hate the new CNN website. It’s visually appealing, but not easy to navigate, having lost some of its originality.

Worse yet, the growing emphasis on video leaves out the 28 million deaf/hard of hearing people (not to mention all the senior citizens and other people) who rely upon captioning. Many of us have switched news websites because of this redesign and increased inaccessibility.

Thanks for the great dissection of the design of the new CNN website. Personally my eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw those masses of links in the mid-lower sections of the homepage. There are tons of them!!!!!

I’d totally agree that video has really moved up in significance on the new site. Much fresher look overall than the old one.

You’re welcome Louis, and thanks for writing a great article. The resolution issue on 1024×768 was obviously fixed shortly after I wrote my comments on CNN ’s “grand unveiling” post (this was sometime BEFORE my comments on your article), which was why, when you checked on Nov 2, it was no longer an issue. Hope that clarifies my statements.
