I agree Michal Kozak that good audio is important. However, you don’t really need to shell out more than $100 for a decent mic. Here’s a demo of a Samson Go Mic for about $50 from Amazon. http://screenr.com/hxC

If you want a low cost way to create a screencast, try Screenr. It’s free. If you combine it with a Keynote or PowerPoint presentation, you can create some pretty slick products at a very low cost, usually free.

Here’s a quick screencast of a Duarte presentation done in PowerPoint 2010 to give you a sense of how nice something like this could be.

I’ll have to check out Screenium.

Word of warning about Jing… the free version gives you a compiled flash movie that is impossible to edit and remove the Jing branding. This made it impossible to rework it at all, so for professional use you’d probably need the paid version.
