Who knew that a college graphic design project could turn into an overnight viral sensation?

On Tuesday, December 22nd, UK-based graphic design student Matt Dempsey, 21, launched a cute primer called Comic Sans Criminal.

The elegant site instructs amateur designers how to use the most juvenile-looking typeface in a designer’s toolbox.

His cheeky project caught on, causing “Comic Sans” to trend on Twitter on Wednesday and gaining nearly 200,000 unique viewers in the first 30 hours of its launch.

Grace Bello interviewed Dempsey on behalf of WDD, about his design background, the popularity of Comic Sans Criminal, and the typeface personalities with which he’d like to go out for a beer. Read more

Client relationships almost always start out really well. You’re both excited to be working together, they’re looking forward to a new site and you’re looking forward to creating something really amazing.

Sometimes it stays this way throughout the process and the working relationship between web designer and client goes smoothly. Other times… not so much.

One of the most frustrating things about client relationships going south is that you often feel like there was absolutely no way to have anticipated it.

Sometimes this is absolutely true but the majority of the time there are little warning signs which you can pick up on very early and use to your advantage.

Today we’re going to be looking at how to deal with the difficult situations which arise when the project doesn’t go quite as smoothly as everyone anticipated.

tips for improving a contact pageIf an organization’s goal is for people to inquire, then its website’s contact page is among its most critical assets.

No matter what the organization promotes, the contact (or sign-up) page is the last step in the sales pitch. This is what the rest of the website, from the home page to the blog to the site map, lead to: enticing people to act.

Yet the contact page gets relatively little attention. The home page usually gets far more. Naturally, the home page is important; it bears the burden of giving a first impression, explaining the website’s purpose and guiding people to the right content—and it has to do it within seconds.

The contact page is a kind of anti-home page: focused, interactive, less persuasive, but more reassuring. Home pages provide information, whereas contact pages provide options. Read more

It seems like we’re still just scratching the surface of what HTML5 is capable of, and different people and organizations come up with new uses and ideas all the time.

MIX Online teamed up with Joshua Davis, the well-known digital generative artist, to create an open source HTML5 Canvas-based JavaScript library called Okapi.

The technology behind the Okapi toolset was originally created for Endless Mural, an online art exhibition where users can create generative art.

The creators were working on some HTML5-based apps for the beta launch of Internet Explorer 9, and Okapi became part of that project.

The interface is slick and works really well, beautifully showcasing Okapi’s capabilities as well as the capabilities of HTML5′s canvas element. Read more

In this post, we take a look at a few popular TV shows – some past and some current – and the fonts that were chosen for their titles.

It’s interesting to see the large number of the classics being used, but also some more modern typefaces and there are certainly a few surprising choices.

If someone from our audience was involved in these font selections, it would be great if they could share some insight as to the reason behind a font choice.

We used various methods to determine the fonts that were being used, however, it was not always possible to establish full accuracy and in such cases a close alternative was listed.

This post is by no means a collection of the best or worst TV shows, nor is it an endorsement of any potential presidential candidates ;)Read more

Today we’ll take a look at seven ways to make sure you don’t end up as a regular contributor to ClientsFromHell.net. Read more

HTML5: Up and Running, by Mark PilgrimAs far as web design literature goes, I think it’s safe to say that 2010 has been the year of HTML5 books.

While a number of titles have been incorporating CSS3 into their content since before 2010, this year has seen major book releases that are focused primarily on HTML5.

So I was pretty excited when Mark Pilgrim sent out a tweet offering free review copies of his new HTML5 book HTML5: Up and Running, courtesy of O’Reilly Media. He responded to my email the same day, and the book arrived shortly thereafter.

Overall, I can say that I was relieved that I really enjoyed the book, and can see myself using it regularly to reference a number of HTML5-related topics — especially some of those that I wasn’t already familiar with.

If this was a paid review, I would have felt more pressure to stay away from the book’s weak spots, but I can honestly say that won’t matter because the book is definitely worth purchasing, and is an excellent source for developers making the transition from HTML4/XHTML to HTML5 and its related technologies. Have you ever looked at a website and felt that you could tell whether it was likely designed by a man or a woman?

Studies have shown that men and women tend to have very different approaches in the way that they use design elements such as colors, shapes, objects and fonts – sometimes even having complete opposite views.

In today’s post we’re showcasing an infographic, designed exclusively for WDD, which depicts some of the different approaches men and women tend to take with their designs.

The graphic shows the different tendencies for each gender covering areas such as typeface colors, the use of straight lines and favorite colors.

This graphic is by no means a rule or generalization for web design by either gender, but it does give us a very rough insight as to how each gender views design and it may even help to influence design decisions when creating a website that targets a specific demographic.
