Web designers and developers sacrifice countless hours and sleep sorting out clients’ objectives, audiences’ needs, brand continuity, page layouts, information architecture, navigation, functionality, cross-browser compatibility, accessibility — the list goes on. And then the web copy finally arrives.

If the content is good, it conveys the right messages, and helps boost online presence, traffic and conversion rates.

The client gets an attractive ROI, the designer is labeled a hero, and referrals flow.

If the content misses the mark, it can damage or even destroy the website, and all that time and effort (not to mention credibility) goes down the toilet.

So here’s an outline of common web copy culprits that kill websites, and how to spot and avoid them. Read more

When it comes to designing and building websites, it never seems to happen fast enough.

Given this fast pace, many small details that are eventually required to build the website are often left out of the design process. While these details might be minor, they are what take a website from nice to truly awesome.

These details are often easy to miss because they don’t drive the overall look and feel of the website. The problem is that as your development team works through the design, it will be forced to design and create these elements for you anyway.

You could adjust the production cycle so that the developers have time to return these assets to you, but why not just get it all done up front so that the process is that much cleaner? Read more

Suminagashi is the ancient Japanese technique of painting on water to create marbleized effects on paper.

Literally, it means “ink-floating”, which is in reference to the Sumi-e inks that were originally used in the technique.

The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution, and then carefully transferred to an absorbent surface, such as paper or fabric.

Now, artists use both traditional inks and acrylic paints (usually watered down) to create this beautiful artwork.

What do you think of this technique? Have you ever tried it? Please share your opinion in the comments. Read more

We all know texture is used a lot in both modern and vintage design, although in many cases of design produced many years ago, noisy and grungy textures were unavoidable.

When it comes to wooden texture in design, though, whether in a print product, a web or mobile user interface element, or general layout, it is always used to enhance visual appeal.

In this article, we will look at five common elements in UI design that use wood textures to do just this.

In addition to discussing these elements and admiring some rather sexy user interface designs that I collected from Dribbble, we will also be learning how to reproduce some of these effects by following mini-tutorials right here in this article. Read more

Blogs have become an integral part of online culture.

Practically everyone reads blogs now, whether they’re “official” news blogs associated with traditional news media, topic-based blogs related to one’s work or hobbies, or blogs purely for entertainment, just about anyone you ask has at least one favorite blog.

But it wasn’t always so. Blogs have a relatively short history, even when compared with the history of the Internet itself.

And it’s only in the past five to ten years that they’ve really taken off and become an important part of the online landscape. Read more

There’s a phenomenal focus on generating traffic in the online marketing world. Businesses fight for clicks, stage immensely competitive bidding wars and spend thousands of hours pushing their websites to the top of search pages.

Top-ranking websites and prominent ads, often on auto-pilot, generate thousands of dollars a day.

But is this the most profitable way to secure clients online? The amount of traffic running through a website isn’t directly tied to the amount of income that the website generates.

A more apt measure of success might be the number of conversions that the website produces from its pool of traffic. More conversions means a quantifiable increase in sales and even an increase in the number quotes you provide to potential clients. It’s not just a measure of traffic.

The eight tips below won’t exponentially increase clicks to your website or push it to the top of search results. However, they will help make the most of traffic that comes your way, which is often more important than quantity. These eight tactics will help turn visitors into customers, drastically increasing your website’s conversion rate. Read more

Web Culture - Grid Wireframing and Design PrototypingThe semantic web has brought on a new generation of Internet technology. As designers and developers work together to redefine the rules of the web, the number of open-source projects and third-party APIs continues to grow.

The opinions of web scholars differ on the use of grid systems. Many argue that setting grid points limits the creativity of designers. Others contend that a grid provides a scientific basis for a design to be perfected.

Both sides provide interesting arguments. These ideas have become part of a unique web culture characterized by influential design rules and open-source projects.

The grid isn’t a master key to perfect design. However, math has proven that certain design specifications provide the best ratios for page elements and layouts. If you’ve heard about any of this before, you may be familiar with the many options that grid-based layouts offer designers. Read more

It is assumed in the online business, especially in the design field, that most big clients are international.

But that doesn’t mean that all lucrative projects are with international clients. As companies such as the controversial BlitzLocal have discovered, there’s a vast and lucrative market for providing local businesses with online visibility.

While such businesses specialize in search marketing, the fact that they exist is fairly solid evidence that there’s a viable market for local design.

Before investing in an international advertising campaign, designers should consider the business opportunities in their local communities.

Whether a small town, regional center or global city, a designer’s community is a source of projects that never runs dry.

The 7 tactics below will help designers locate new clients, attract the attention of local business leaders and generate a region-based design empire. Read more

As a designer, especially one without a lot of experience, it’s normal to look at the designs of others and think how great their work is compared to our own.

It’s a frustrating experience for many, especially when we can’t quite put our finger on why their design is so great when ours is merely good.

The thing about design, though, is that greatness is usually quantifiable.

Unlike with more abstract and interpretable creative pursuits, there are definite elements that go into “great” designs.

The best part is that anyone who can create a good design can go on to create great designs with a bit of practice. Here’s what goes into great design and what you can do to improve your own designs. Read more

Irina Werning is a photographer who loves to look at other peoples’ old photographs. Instead of just admiring the photos, she wonders how people would feel and look if they were to reenact the same photos today.

This project, titled Back To The Future features a collection of her photographs of individuals and groups of people reenacting a photograph that was taken in the past (usually many years ago).

The result is somewhat beautiful. You can tell just from one photo that a lot of work has been put into research, locations and props for each and every shoot – even time and money has been put towards finding the same (or similar) object in the background, such as wallpaper or curtains.

Irina Werning is a photographer from Buenos Aires, Argentina. If you like her unique style of portrait photography, be sure to check out her portfolio.

A few things can be learned from this latest roundup of new WordPress themes, all released within the past five months or so.

First of all, there’s a definite trend toward more premium themes, with fewer high-quality free themes available.

Minimalist and simple, clean themes are definitely the favorite of designers at the moment, representing the vast majority of the themes in this roundup.

There’s also been an increase in jQuery integration in themes, though this has been a growing trend for awhile now.

A large percentage of themes in this list have at least some jQuery integration built-in, and some have quite a lot. Read more
