Farewell to Fireworks

By Ben Moss  |  May. 13, 2013  |  60 comments

Last week, Adobe announced that there will be no further development of their Fireworks application. Security updates will be provided and bug fixes may arrive, but for all intents and purposes Fireworks CS6 is a dead man walking. The petitions for clemency have already begun, but it seems likely that at some point Adobe’s CEO will give the order to flick the switch and like a paper rocket on a rainy fourth of July, Fireworks will be no more.

Whilst many in the web design community bemoan Adobe’s lack of foresight, there are others — myself included — that...

No more Creative Suite: what does it mean?

By Cameron Chapman  |  May. 10, 2013  |  38 comments

Adobe has just announced that Creative Suite will cease to exist after CS6 (in name at least), and be replaced exclusively by Creative Cloud. On its most basic level, that means there won’t be perpetual licenses for future Adobe products (though, for now, you’ll still be able to buy CS6 in that format) and instead all of their Creative Cloud software will be available by subscription only.

For creatives, this is a huge shift. Adobe has been the leader in graphics and web software for years (especially after their purchase of Macromedia), and designers...

An introduction to Edge Reflow

By Sam Piggott  |  Apr. 2, 2013  |  15 comments

Edge Reflow is one of the exciting new weapons in Adobe’s ever-expanding Creative Suite arsenal; helping to bring the modern web’s powerful features within reach for designers.

Reflow is designed to help creatives work towards the holy grail of current web design standards: responsive design. Previously only possible for the HTML-savvy, now everyone can produce sites that rearrange themselves for different...

Getting started with Edge Animate

By Sam Piggott  |  Mar. 25, 2013  |  7 comments

In this tutorial, we’ll be getting started with Adobe’s new animation tool, Adobe Edge Animate. Edge Animate harnesses the power of HTML5 animation, and allows the user to create dynamic, exciting web-based animations in a quick, easy and fun way, using a user-friendly timeline-based interface as opposed to blocks of daunting code.

In our first video for Edge Animate, “Getting Started”, we’ll be constructing our first animated banner. You’ll learn the basics of becoming familiar with Edge’s interface, as well as the following handy techniques to get you started on creating your own animations: using the key framing tools to bring your text and images to life; harness animation easing techniques to accelerate your elements on and off screen; grouping...

Adobe announce new features for Muse

By Cameron Chapman  |  Feb. 28, 2013  |  no comments

Adobe has just announced new features in their Muse web design app. Muse launched just nine months ago, and in that time has had a few fairly substantial updates which make it a significantly more useful tool for professional designers.

Muse, from the very beginning, has allowed designers to create unique, free-form designs without visual restrictions. It’s perfect for graphic and visual designers who don’t want to write code but also don’t want to depend on programmers to get their...

Adobe announce new features for Creative Cloud

By Cameron Chapman  |  Dec. 11, 2012  |  3 comments

Today, Adobe announced some exciting new features in Creative Cloud, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Muse. Of particular interest to a lot of designers are the updates to Photoshop, while teams and agencies will be particularly interested in Adobe’s new Creative Cloud Team subscriptions.

Despite the fact that Creative Cloud has only been available for a few months, there are well over 200,000 subscribers, with 80% choosing...

Check out Adobe Creative Cloud's latest updates live on Facebook

By Cameron Chapman  |  Dec. 3, 2012  |  1 comment

One of the biggest advantages to Adobe’s Creative Cloud membership is the regular updates Adobe offers to Cloud members. Those updates mean that you no longer have to wait a year or more for a major release.

Although Adobe doesn’t publish a set schedule, so far, new updates have been shipping every couple of months. These updates include everything from major changes and improvements to JDIs (Just Do Its).

On December 11, Adobe will be announcing its next big overhaul to some Creative Cloud products...

Adobe "Create the Web"

Sep. 25, 2012  |  5 comments

Yesterday, Adobe used the keynote slot of their ‘Create the Web’ event in San Francisco to preview what they hope, will be the next generation of tools that you and I use to build the web.

For those of us not lucky enough to be in the hall with them, the event was streamed online — ironically displayed using Flash Player. That was however, the only dated aspect of the presentation.

Much of the community has been querying Adobe’s commitment to innovation in the last couple of years, especially with the apparent cash cow of...

No more fear of Illustrator!

Jul. 3, 2012  |  16 comments

If you’re anything like me, you’ve always viewed Adobe Illustrator as an incredibly intimidating program. I think Illustrator might have the reputation of being the most complex program designers use.

And because of that, a lot of new designers are afraid to even start using it. They take one look at it and go back to Photoshop.

Sure, I’ve used Illustrator for various projects, but I always felt a little bit like I wasn’t “worthy” of Illustrator. Like I didn’t have the necessary skills to do the program justice.

After attending...

Adobe’s new Creative Cloud subscription service

Jun. 5, 2012  |  7 comments

I recently had the opportunity to attend Adobe’s Reviewer’s Workshop in New York, where they covered the new CS6 product suite, including major overhauls to Illustrator, aspects of Photoshop, and the official launch of Adobe Muse.

More interestingly, to me at least, was the new Creative Cloud subscription service. Creatives, especially small agencies and freelancers, have long struggled to pay for Adobe’s products. After all, shelling out hundreds or thousands of dollars for their software can be a struggle for small businesses, really cutting into profits.

Even hiring new employees can be an issue, when you figure that the Design & Web Premium...

Review: Photoshop CS6 Beta

Mar. 26, 2012  |  9 comments

Only once in the history of Photoshop has Adobe released a free public beta, until now. Photoshop CS6 Beta is now available for free download from Adobe, for a limited time (the beta will eventually expire, though at the moment there doesn’t seem to be a set date for that to happen).

This is a beta release, and while Adobe says they’ve done thorough testing, there are bound to still be some bugs. To that end, make sure that if you’re working on a critical project, you’re prepared for that (and that you save often!).

During...
