Top 10 content management systems

There are dozens of great CMSs out there. Regardless of what type of site you’re building, there’s probably one perfectly-suited to it.
The problem is that most designers and developers don’t want to spend time learning a bunch of different CMSs. They want to learn one, or maybe two, and use those for all of their sites. That means they need something that’s both flexible and powerful.
The CMSs below fit that bill pretty well. Some have practically become household names (in designer households, at least), while others are a bit more obscure.
The first three, WordPress, Joomla!, and Drupal, are pretty unarguably the best CMSs out there. The next seven are a bit more subjective, but have a good combination of support, features, and ease-of-use.
Try them out, and decide for yourself which one best fits your needs and the needs of your clients. Read more

Sometimes it seems like Tumblr is the most often overlooked blogging platform out there. People are never quite sure what to make of it.
It’s not quite like a “regular” blog platform (like WordPress or Blogger) and it’s not microblogging either. It’s tumblogging, but a lot of people don’t know what thadet means.
And it can be a little daunting for designers who are trying to figure out how to develop Tumblr themes considering there are seven post types (or eight if you count photo slideshow posts as separate from regular photo posts).
One thing that Tumblr definitely has going in its favor is the number of themes that are now available. Tons of free themes and a growing premium theme marketplace make it easy to find a theme you like, and most are easily customizable even if you don’t know tons of code.

But not all themes are created equal. Differences in quality become more pronounced in free themes, but there’s even a lot of discrepancies in premium themes, both in terms of visual style and actual code.

There is a lot of buzz around QR codes at the moment, so we thought we would take a look at some of the most creative and stunning QR code business cards on the web.
We love QR codes as they connect offline and online while challenging traditional design at the same time.
First of all, in case you have been living under a rock, let’s answer the obvious question. What the hell is a QR code?!
A quick response (QR) code is a two dimensional code that can be scanned and read by smartphone cameras to transfer information. The information can then be encoded to text, add a vCard contact, open a URL or much more.
So, by placing them on a business card, you can digitally pass on your contact details, direct people to a website, send them to a Flickr photo set or Facebook fan page or offer a special discount etc.
Hopefully the examples below will help to inspire you on how QR codes can be incorporated creatively in your designs. Or at least, provided a few interesting ways that they can be used to connect offline and online media.

Chilling Underwater series by Erin Mulvehill

Erin Mulvehill is a young photographer based in Brooklyn, who graduated with a BS honors degree in photography from Syracuse University.
Unlike many modern photographers, she shoots on analog 35mm film (she scans the negatives to do post-processing in Photoshop).
In this post you’ll see the breath-taking photos captured in her Underwater, to be reborn series, which has been dedicated to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
The Underwater series includes images of what resembles girls trapped under ice, frozen in time. The photos are chilling and hauntingly beautiful.
There are twenty four images in the series, with at least a dozen different models. The idea for the series, according to Erin, came to her in a dream. And despite appearances, the photos were shot in a studio, not underwater. Read more

The majority of photo manipulations are unconvincing at best, and some are downright awful. Not so the work of Maite Guerrero.
Guerrero’s Minuscule collection of photo manipulations is truly magnificent. So much attention has been paid to detail, composition, and scale in this series, that it’s easy to believe the images are real.

Trends can be born so silently and subtly that we seldom notice them.
And when you survey hundreds of websites, you often see patterns that you would otherwise miss. One such pattern is the frequent use of tags and ribbons.
These small flourishes have become increasingly popular. This article addresses the two elements because they are used together so frequently.
While ribbons are self-explanatory, by tags I mean the faux labels that hang down from the top of the screen, like a tag on a t-shirt.
The websites that use these elements are truly outstanding in quality. Putting together this gorgeous showcase turned out to be remarkably easy. Few trends are like this: one usually has to wade through many poor examples to find the tasty ones.

Impressive Nail’s Life series by Vlad Artazov

Simple, everyday objects have long been used in photography to create interesting images.
We commonly see them in still-life images, or juxtaposed in unexpected surroundings. But Czech photography Vlad Artazov has taken the idea of using simple objects to create striking images one step further with his Nails’ life series.
Using simple building nails, Artazov has recreated situations found in everyday life.
Some are rather steamy, others perfectly mundane, but made interesting due to their abstract nature.
Most of the images are in black and white, though some color photos are included in the series as well. Various other hardware and building tools make appearances too, including some nuts and bolts, a hammer, and a screw.

Funny caricatures by Anthony Geoffroy

Caricatures, by their very definition, exaggerate the physical qualities of a person and yet do so in a way that leaves the subject of the caricature entirely recognizable.
Celebrities are some of the most popular subjects of caricatures, primarily because they’re so easy to recognize, and often become known for specific physical traits.
Anthony Geoffroy is an illustrator and graphic artist who has created some of the best celebrity caricatures you’re likely to see.
He’s done caricatures of everyone from Dr. House to Robert De Niro, and he does caricatures of both celebrities and the characters they portray.
In this post, you’ll see some of the best Geoffroy has to offer, with caricatures including Bruce Willis, Leslie Nielsen and Stephen King, among many others.

A showcase of mobile e-commerce

Optimizing websites for the mobile web is a chore. And optimizing e-commerce websites for the mobile web is a beast that designers and developers have only begun to tame.
Not surprisingly, larger companies are embracing the medium first, likely because they have the resources and sales flow to justify it. After all, even if an e-commerce website gets sizable traffic, a small percentage of that will be mobile-based. And an even smaller percentage of that traffic will actually complete their sales.
With the momentum only really beginning in this arena, people’s experience with full mobile e-commerce transactions is limited. This makes the niche an experimental one at best. Fortunately, given the nature of e-commerce, success can be carefully measured and tested. This is a medium still in need of definition.
A huge hurdle towards progress is the scarcity of examples. Surfing galleries to find a ton of interesting ideas is not even close to being quick and easy. There are only a few small collections of mobile design, even less for e-commerce. To address this, I have collected 10 fantastic examples of mobile e-commerce. QR codes have been included for easier browsing. You can find many apps for your mobile phones that can read these codes. Read more

Fantastic wakeboards to inspire your designs

Wakeboarding is an extreme sport where athletes are dragged behind a high-powered speed boat on a supremely engineered board.
They then proceed to carve from left to right and back again, each time jumping to astonishing heights off the wake created by the boat.
It’s a fast and furious sport with a degree of danger sufficient to get the most discerning adrenaline junkie’s heart pumping after landing a big jump.
Like most professional board sports, over the years the designs have evolved with the manufacturing and precision of the boards themselves.

Advanced commenting systems for WordPress

Artists unite for Japan Flags

Since March 11, the tragedy in Japan has impacted the entire world in many ways and unfortunately continues to do so.
But can we make a difference? We certainly can! As artists and designers, we can support the people of Japan and their struggle with our art.
French Agency Creasenso did exactly that by gathering 11 talented illustrators to create some amazing designs for sale, in order to support the Red Cross in its efforts to aid refugees. They will donate 100% of all profits to this worthy cause.
The illustrations featured here are not only poignant and beautiful, but also evoke a powerful spectrum of emotions.

Inspiring Artworks Created with the Brushes App

The Brushes app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad provides a unique environment for artists to create works of art by finger painting on touchscreen displays.
The app achieved notoriety in 2009 when artist, Jorge Colombo, created a cover for the New Yorker magazine with the tip of his finger.
Since then, artists all over the world have been using the Brushes App to create paintings of different styles and genres.
On Flickr, there are currently 713 groups where artists have been sharing the work they’ve created with the Brushes app. One group in particular, Just Brushes, has over 3200 members and showcases paintings created from scratch.

50+ New WordPress Themes: March 2011

A few things can be learned from this latest roundup of new WordPress themes, all released within the past five months or so.
First of all, there’s a definite trend toward more premium themes, with fewer high-quality free themes available.
Minimalist and simple, clean themes are definitely the favorite of designers at the moment, representing the vast majority of the themes in this roundup.
There’s also been an increase in jQuery integration in themes, though this has been a growing trend for awhile now.
A large percentage of themes in this list have at least some jQuery integration built-in, and some have quite a lot. Read more

30 of the Best Font Foundries

Typography is one of the most important parts of any design, whether it’s digital or in print. Good typography can take a mediocre design to new heights, while bad typography can make what would be a great design lackluster or even bad.
For web designers, typography choices have long been limited to web-safe fonts. But that’s changed in recent years, first with the advent of things like sIFR that let you replace standard web fonts with Flash for headlines or other small blocks of text, and now with @font-face and web services for embedding fonts.
Below we’ve collected thirty fantastic type foundries. The majority of these allow at least some kind of online, embedded use, either with Flash or with @font-face. But we’ve also included some other foundries with more restrictive licenses.
You can always use fonts from these in images or graphics, either online or off. Be sure to check the license for each font to determine exactly what uses are allowed. Read more

CSS3 is gaining momentum, despite the fact that the standard hasn’t even been finalized.
There are hundreds of tutorials out there to teach designers how to use it, but unfortunately a lot of them cover the same ground.
And some of the tutorials teach designers to do things that they might not think of as useful, though the techniques can usually be adapted to fit a project perfectly.
