40+ free PSDs and actions for mock-ups

By Kendra Gaines  |  May. 13, 2013  |  11 comments

It’s all about presentation. Ideas and concepts are great, but mean nothing if they cannot be properly communicated. To help others understand them, we may create prototypes or sketch out an idea to get to a meeting of the minds. Fortunately, in graphic design, we do that by creating mock-ups.

Most times when we create designs, it’s tempting to send a flat graphic, as is, to our client or out to our intended audience. It can work, but it’s much more effective when we have a way for people to actually visualize a design in its intended environment. It’s easier to understand a mobile app when it’s being presented on an actual mobile phone, rather than just a standard graphic in a simple size.

How to move from Illustrator to Photoshop without rasterizing (the easy way)

By Sam Jones  |  May. 6, 2013  |  9 comments

I’ve always had trouble getting large groups of shapes from Illustrator over to Photoshop without rasterizing them all in the process. Up until recently the only way I knew how was to copy and paste each shape one by one – a process which soon becomes tedious.

However, recently I discovered a method which takes less than a minute, regardless of how many shapes...

Deal of the week: 54% off PsDefaults

By Ben Moss  |  Apr. 25, 2013  |  no comments

It’s easy to become jaded with an application, especially an application like Photoshop, where you open up a new document to be presented with a blank screen.

Professional results are easy to achieve with the right know-how, but professional results take time to produce even for experienced artworkers.

So this week our sister site, MightyDeals.com, has put together a great...

Is Photoshop dead?

By Javier Ghaemi  |  Feb. 14, 2013  |  44 comments

I guess a more suitable title might be ‘is Photoshop still an appropriate tool for designing typography on the web?’ But that lacks the dramatic appeal of the above.

Like many of you, I have always used Photoshop to create mock-up compositions of my designs. For as long as I can remember it has been the industry standard and the software of choice for most designers I have worked with. I have spent weeks designing pixel perfect layouts, grouping elements into hierarchical folders and labelling all of my layers to make the transition from beautiful mock up to code as smooth as possible.

I would be full of enthusiasm, energy and excitement explaining my designs to a developer, toggling layer states on and off to try and illustrate my vision through Photoshop but would always be slightly disappointed as my shiny,...

The incredible flying houses of Laurent Chehere

By Stacey Kole  |  Jan. 14, 2013  |  8 comments

If the thought of flying houses conjures up images of Dorothy, Toto, and ruby slippers in the wake of that famous Kansas tornado, then you’re in good company—but the wonderful Wizard of Oz has nothing on French photographer Laurent Chehere.

Known for his work for such high profile clients as Nike and Audi, Chehere swapped his commercial cap for that of world traveler, gathering inspiration from the beauty of Japan, Bolivia, Argentina, and more. But for all of his globe-trotting, it was the photographer’s...

Freakish visions of kidulthood

By Stacey Kole  |  Dec. 12, 2012  |  8 comments

It happens to all of us: that rude awakening when we realize Santa is just a department store employee and the Tooth Fairy is really our parents. And when that fateful day arrives, a little wide-eyed innocence is lost and we inch our way closer to the realities of adulthood.

But what would it look like if we recaptured...

One of the biggest advantages to Adobe’s Creative Cloud membership is the regular updates Adobe offers to Cloud members. Those updates mean that you no longer have to wait a year or more for a major release.

Although Adobe doesn’t publish a set schedule, so far, new updates have been shipping every couple of months. These updates include everything from major changes and improvements to JDIs (Just Do Its).

On December 11, Adobe will be announcing its next big overhaul to some Creative Cloud products...

Gender bending

By Ben Moss  |  Nov. 8, 2012  |  3 comments

Oh Photoshop, what wonders you perform: creative freedom second to none, the bitmap tool of choice for most digital artists.

The best part of 2 weeks salary, for the average American, to purchase; and countless hours to master; Photoshop is the de facto standard for all professional image manipulation.

But there’s a darker side to Photoshop; relied upon heavily by magazines to airbrush women into idealized versions of themselves, it’s hard to find a photoshoot of a female celebrity that hasn’t been lit, reshaped and tanned to “enhance her femininity”.
