Why should you become retina ready?
Oh, look! It’s a brand spanking new, shiny technological feature. And it probably helps that it’s being implemented by Apple products. A couple of great sites (like this one) have already started using it. What does it do? Will it be around forever? What does it mean and when or why should I try it?
We’re talking about becoming retina ready. I’ll be honest with you; when I first heard about it, I just threw it to the side. It’s...
20+ wonderful design-heavy websites
If you’re asking me to share with you some of the best web designs in the world, chances are I’m going to point you in the direction of something that’s pretty minimal. In fact, if you ask most designers, they’ll point you to sites that are equally sparse. Myself and others tend to believe that less is more. Plus, we’re entering an age where audiences want less fluff and more information & content. That lends to the question, how do we handle design-heavy websites?
I don’t mean design in the sense of layouts and higher understanding. I mean design in terms of aesthetics and decorations and lots of visual stuff. I’m big on separating the two, but when you think about it, I start to wonder when we on the web even left that idea. Think about it like this: many print designers know that you can’t do too many crazy effects because they don’t...
30 successful sports websites
It’s a well known fact that a sport is not just pleasure: it’s a business (without a doubt a big business) that can bring fantastic fortunes to those who know the rules of the game. So as long as sport is business, every sport project, event, person or team needs an impressive website. Here you’ll find the main design features that matter in current sport web design.
When it comes to sport websites bright custom backgrounds are the way to go. Sport teams, athletes, sporting goods manufacturers and national sport leagues want to have a website with their brand colors on the background. Their colors are usually something that fans recognize instantly, so why not utilize the colors’ popularity in the background design? But there is one exception! When it comes to fitness clubs they prefer gray backgrounds. Very often the shades of gray dominate...
Trend alert: 20 animated website designs
In order to be a great designer, you need to be on top of the trend before it becomes a trend. Being able to have this sense of what’s going to take off is key in creating a wonderful product. You’re recognized for being one of the ‘firsts’ and you’re also given props for your innovation and new approach to common problems.
All this is great and desired. It can, however, be tough to keep up with trends because they come so frequently and you never know what’s...
Flat design vs. skeuomorphism
It seems that there has been a line drawn in the sand. A few brave design pioneers have all but denounced skeuomorphic design as yesterday’s news and have voted it off of the proverbial island.
Are we witnessing the turning point of design as we know it, or are these champions...
Future trends in web design: predictions for 2013
Another year has passed, which means it’s time for our annual instalment of design predictions for the coming year.
In technology, one year can make a world of difference, and the changes can shape the way we design, test and market our websites. As we all know, technology changes faster than we can keep up with it!
So, how do you stay on top of the latest and greatest technologies...
Typographic art
Good typography is an art: choosing the best type to complement the meaning of the content, balancing sizes and spacing for optimum readbility, and not drawing attention to itself in the process. But now designers and artists are increasingly taking typography a step further, blurring the lines between words and pictures.
There are several different types (no pun intended) of typographic art, the main three forms being: phrases, usually aphorisms, maxims or quotes, displayed in a typographic style intended to be visually appealing; single words highly decorated to amplify...
28 amazing parallax scrolling sites
The way that we that we navigate our websites is extremely important. The reason being that the user experience and the way in which they interact with the website makes or breaks the usability of the website.
If someone cannot get around on your site, then it’s useless. If someone can get around and is easily able to find what they are looking for, that makes a major difference.
In playing with navigation and incorporating that into new technologies, we’ve come across an effect widely used today. This effect is called parallax scrolling. parallax scrolling is great, not just...
The splash strikes back: 40+ splash-like headers
A long time ago, on a website not that far away, you’d be welcomed by a web page that didn’t have much on it.
It maybe had a logo or picture and a button or link telling you to ‘enter’ the site you just visited. If you were really neat, you maybe had a (then Macromedia) Flash intro with loud music and awful typography. I mean, this was all the rage and your website wasn’t cool at all if you didn’t have one of these splash pages.
Fast forward to now and people will tell you a splash is stupid. It’s corny. It’s useless. They’ll even tell you it’s a detrimental to your search engine optimization. Whatever the excuse, these...
