These are some impressive and beautiful designs. I was hoping to find some ideas for our upcoming redesign, but found little here that would lend itself either to:
1. A site with lots of content in lots of different areas; and
2. An audience over age 25.

I agree with Walter. It looks like the same person chose all 100 because they all have the same flaw. These are not great web designs, though they all have a common artistic element.

The majority of these are not designed they are wanna be artist. Almost every example is a busy cluttered mess. Throwing in everything for “wow” factor is not design, it is the complete opposite. Graffiti maybe, design – hardly.

There are some great designs on your list: Ali Felski, Viget, and a couple others, but I don’t think these all constitute ‘outstanding artistic design’. They’re nice, sure, but I would have tried to include (and this is by no means a criticism of the list you’ve compiled, God knows, there is just too many great sites to find them all) a few that aren’t so heavy-handedly grunge, but still manage to captivate, like: http://www.thinkbrownstone.com , http://www.designsensory.com , http://weightshift.com, http://www.jasonsantamaria.com, http://bookmarks.bennington.edu/bookmarks.html

Am I the only person who thinks these are all 90% identical? Lots of lovely sites, but one or two ideas expressed over and over again. I guess we know what was hot in 2008, let’s hope 2009 will usher in a new era of variation!

Thanks for putting Design is Philosophy on the list. It’s always nice to see that people are paying attention to what you do. Love the design of this site btw: visually pleasing and functional at the same time.

I agree with Suzanne, highly repetitive ideas in much of these – although of a high standard. I guess the person who selected them has a thing for this style (and that’s fine) but there’s not much diversity in this 100.

An incredible array of design. Extremely versatile and dynamic. I will definitly be referencing this for ideas later on.

It seems that all of these sites are pretty cluttered, and have elements that take up space simply for the sake of it. Also they seem to all have to same “blog” type design, aligned center and very long. There is some nice stuff here, but I wish there could be a better array of design. When stripped down to their basic elements many of these sites are very similar.

I don’t mean to sound critical of the list, it is a good one, just something that I noticed.

Very nice selection. Quite slow for all the jpgs to load but you can’t overcome this problem

There are some people saying that this sites doesn’t feature design. I would like to ask what these people regards as design, using Helvetica bold in a white background? I have a career in graphic design, and we have always been told to not to limit ourselves. I have always designed by the “Form follows function” principle, and anytime I add something I take good care that it won’t interfere with user navigation or the information. Take a look at my newest site http://colorcitos.com that features the same trend than the awesome sites featured here. Can you say you can’t find something on the site? the word Catalog, is repeated several times in different contexts. There’s even an advice (for the computer unfriendly people ) on the catalog page to click on the images in order to show them larger. This is design. Design to achieve maximum functionality. Some people like to design with Helvetica bold on white, and other people like to do this kind of design. I try my best at designing and I believe all these designers do, we can see in their designs that they put life and heart in every work to achieve a clear navigation. Every important element is highlighted to be quickly accessible and the overall design is even clean to me. Maybe someone with twenty years in the business belongs to a different generation that cannot read things as fast as youths can do now, but the current designer generation knows that youths and middle age people must be tackled using a myriad of things to caught their attention.
Walter, I can see you featured my favorite site nowadays, Free People boutique. Not only its design is superb, but it has a catalog made in flash that really blow my mind because you can easy reach every garment the model has, I haven’t seen anything like that in any other place.

My website is much more creative and better designed than about half of these professionally illustrated a lot of these are not truly artisitc at all.

Its a great collection. Thats a great list of user interfaces. Nice work.

Many of the website featured in this gallery has excellent in terms of design and functionality, but few of the website designed showcased here are just have excessive design. Excessive design not only makes the website look poor quality but also harms the user experience and makes it difficult to navigate.

I guess this new “messed-up” look counters the heavy-duty scripting required to get these sites to function. I am totally old school, a certainly no code writer, so I resist the messy-page trend. If that quality appeals to a specific audience, fine, but the real passion is in the functionality. Some of the sites have marvelous technique, but I didn’t find much “appealing” in the crayon-scribbling, color-clashing, type-bashing, bad .ai rendering, weak-cartooning chaos in many sites… I certainly don’t think these are the best designs. I think they reflect your taste. Your taste ‘right now’. These “styles” will be, “oh, that’s so-LAST-Month” by next Tuesday. But thanks for pulling together a quick preview of some of the trash-design out there! Helps me to demonstrate to clients what they are up against!
