introductionIn portfolio web pages, especially in the field of design, one of the first things that you will notice is an introductory text consisting of a few words about the company or the designer behind the site.

This can be extremely useful for readers, as it provides quick and direct information about the designer, or the company behind the site.

These introductions are generally highlighted by the use of large text, positioned at the top of the site, and always catch the visitor’s eye. They give a more personal feeling to the site and tend to replace the traditional taglines under a logo for example.

In this article, we list 50 examples of excellent web page introductions used in portfolio websites that you can use as inspiration for your own designs.

Thank you for the great list, really inspiring!

    • http://www.truenorthe.com Courtney

I agree, all very catchy, pithy, and appealing. Makes me think about my home page and if it’s up to snuff!

    • http://digitalmash.com Rob Morris

Thanks for the shoutout guys. Is it just me, or is the whole ‘Hello.’ thing overdone these days…?

      @digitalmash (twitter)

    • http://www.se7enize.com SE7EN

      It’s not just you. :P

    • http://blog.insicdesigns.com insic

nice list. and great welcome lines from nice websites. Inspiring indeed.

    • http://www.federicacau.com/ Federica Cau

Thank you for including my site into this simply wonderfully inspiring list :)

      @federicacau

    • http://www.design-links.nl Marc

      Thanks for the list!

    • http://www.davidhellmann.com David Hellmann

      Thx for sharing. nice collection!

    • Roberto

      Yes, really inspiring!

    • http://www.patternhead.com Patternhead

      Some great intros here.

Memo to self: get your portfolio site updated :)

    • http://howrefreshing.com.au Scott Dixon

Rob, you took the words out of my mouth. Great job with digitalmash.

    • http://www.danhbaweb20.com Danh ba web 2.0

Thanks you very much. Great list for me
Keep up the good work !

    • http://www.thedesigndork.com Corey Freeman

Awesome list! I think intros seem to work better for portfolios. I like the Chris Hortsch intro. I like green and I like couches, so..win!

    • http://twitter.com/reachstudents Luke

      Inspiring stuff.

I agree with Rob above, the hello is too ubiquitous now (I especially don’t like the multi-lingual hello/bonjour etc) and could usually be dropped and the intro would still work fine.

    • http://www.CHIDIMAR.com Enk.

This was a Cool list.. loved a lot of ‘em..
especially the footer at http://www.davidhellmann.com/ its too cool.. but not matching the header, i guess !

    • http://www.pushingbuttons.net Timothy

Nice list. These snippits are becoming less of a perk and more of a necessity these days

    • Liam

@Rob: Somehow, I don’t think people using Hello as a greeting, whether it be in text or speech, will be stopping any time soon.

    • Prakash

      Great!!!!

    • Rysum

Fun stuff! Just remember your audience when you write your intro. What are they after and what are their pain points? Let them know you are the specialist to solve their specific problem and say it in a way that isn’t vanilla without sounding like a personal ad.

    • http://www.graphikfood.com Zeb

Very good list and one of these are amazing !

    • http://digitalmash.com Rob Morris

@Liam. Erm, good point. But I know you know what I meant.

And for the sake of argument, do you use ‘Good morrow’ when you greet people in the morning….? A-ha!

      Victory is mine.

      @digitalmash (twitter)

    • http://www.bioinfiz.com bs kishore

      Inspiring and eye-catchy !

    • http://www.webia.info Bogdan Pop

      @Enk.

Sure it does. Imagine you’re in the middle of the room. One time your staring at the wall you see when sitting at your desk, the other time is the wall behind your desk. Very nice idea! And the implementation is awesome.

    • http://www.aledesign.it aledesign.it

Thanks for the list! Really nice and important!! a good way for inspiration for a good work! thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

    • http://www.fonts.com FontSmithy

i thought some of them were good and some were lame
some would really turn me away
which of these have worked for the designers?
i think some of them have done more harm than good
chris merritt for example, my company would never go for that, they click away immediately

    • http://www.dotworks.pl macias

“i’m a designer ..maybe not the best but the coolest “” :) great :)

    • Brian M

The one by Chris Merritt is amazing. That’s the way to make a website!

    • kaika

      I like this post!It’s cool:)

    • http://www.nickhand.net Nick

    • http://www.brushthis.com Liora

Before this article, I thought I had to fix my intro. Now I KNOW I must fix up my intro. Big time. Most of those examples provide excellent sources of inspiration – color, imagery, wording and humor.

    • http://blog.kreativeking.com kreativeKING

These websites are absolutely inspirational. This will definitely be getting bookmarked. Lets see some Flash Sites. =D

    • http://www.webdesigntipsonline.com/site_design.html Professional Website Design

Great List of pretty cool websites.

Great timing because I am reviewing my site in the next couple of weeks. Time for a freshen up.

I definitely think the intro could be very powerful if you can relate a couple of key points to your potential client.

After all, your site should be about how you can help them and how they are going to benefit.

    • http://www.fudgegraphics.com Franz Jeitz

awesome post. I’m sure to check back when I update my portfolio. Excellent source of inspiration. Thank you!

    • http://www.jamisonbanham.com.au Jamison Banham

Great list, don’t think I should be up there as my website is pretty dated now, needs an update.

I personally do think the “Hi…” “Hello…” “My name is…” are all overused, but then again portfolio websites are the only place you really see them.

      @jamisonbanham (twitter)

    • http://www.buildinternet.com Zach Dunn

This was a great inspiration for a round up. I’m also in the process of redesigning a portfolio site, and this is extremely helpful!

    • http://www.oopshey.com oops hey

hi.. from indonesia here.. there are great list. an great inspiration for creating my intro..
      thanks for share

    • http://www.juusmedia.com Jason

Superb list of ‘about me’ sections in websites. With this resource you can get a good idea on what everyone else is doing and it gives you the chance to step back and try your own style!

      Thanks!

    • http://www.podcastforfreelancers.com Paul the Knight

The ability to wrap up what a whole site / company is fantastic, and a really useful convention.

    • http://www.podcastforfreelancers.com Paul the Knight

Sorry I meant “Wrap up in one paragraph”

    • Kevin May

Is Frederica Cau’s site a joke to this list? The logo is horrible, colors are bad and the background was downloaded off of deviantart.

    • Mario Luevanos

I’m sick and tired of seeing the phrase “HELLO, blah blah blah…” It’s used way too much. But overall the designs are nice.

    • http://www.xelerate.co.cc/ Nytryk

      okey guys,
      what about me?

    • http://onsuchthings.com susan thom

      hi,
I am working on a new online website of inspirational articles of hope, faith and experience.
Posting your articles is free, and other authors and readers are waiting to read and comment, as you may also read and comment on others’ articles.
It is good practice, with feedback, and it is a good way to add some positive energy to a tired world that could use some inspiration.

      onsuchthings.com

we welcome you to post and view our site,
      thank you for your time,
      my best regards,
      sue thom

    • http://www.rjvisuals.com Ritesh Jain

Nice List!! Here should be this also

      http://www.rjvisuals.com/html/main.htm

    • Chris

Anyone notice how they are all (I think) web designer sites? Anyone out there using a similar approach (direct, poetic, handshake-style) for clients with businesses in other areas?

e.g. Top of my head here (no claims to fame)…

Sleep on me – it’s bliss (bed company?)
Go hard, we’ll be there at the finish line (recovery drink for athletes?)
Dig deep, bite big (company that sells Cats and other construction gear?)

mind you… these read more like mottos I guess…

    • http://inspiredm.com/ Mike

      great list. Thank you!

    • http://mattradel.com Matt Radel

Hey, thanks for the shout out! Privileged to be mentioned in such great company. :)

Very talented people out there with some extra ordinary portfolios…

      Keep it up guys…

    • Justin

“Hello, I’m a web designer with originality. I like to see what trends are used by 95% of my peers and follow them instead of being creative. Hire me!”

I love the design of a lot of these sites, but this trend needs to evolve a bit.

    • naoise

are you focusing on the graphic design or in the message…?!
because if it’s the message, just 3 or 4 I found really “inspirational”. I love WDD but man if you just do posts like hotdogs I’ll consider my next click!

Great range of page intros. One that stood out and had the most impact on me was the one for Deaxon. I liked how it was a ‘we’ but also they mentioned ‘hand-crafted’ web site creation. Straight away it gives the impression of quality, not just another cheap template designer.
