airline_logosEvery day thousands of people take it to the air… With so many airlines to choose from, branding is extremely important and at its core lies logo design.

In this article we’ll take a logo at the logos of over 50 popular airlines. The list is by no means a complete list of all airlines and is just intended for inspiration for your own projects.

Noteworthy is the lack of any depiction of an airplane in most of these logos, but a tendency to suggest flying through the use of curved shapes that resemble wings.

The fonts used tend to be sans serif for the most part, although there’s a fair share of serif typefaces as well. The colors vary a lot, but there appears to be a clear tendency towards reds and blues. Now fasten your seatbelt and let’s take off!

This is an excellent idea for a post and was interesting to view. The logos show not just great design, but often concepts that give each country its special flavor.

I think corporate logos of airlines are special category of corporate identity discipline. And you made a nice collection.

I like the logo of Swissair. And Lufthansa. But mostly not because of form or typography usage or composition, I remember the service on the flights by them were great.

Swissair airline doesn’t exist anymore, unfortunately. But logo stays :)

Awsome list. Has anyone noticed the trick of the eye on the TAP logo. Try focusing in the middle of the A at the Un-screened square like shape it makes. If you relax your eyes a little you can make out a road :o Or a runway!

    • http://www.instantshift.com DKumar M.

I know Lufthansa is the best… but repeating it’s logo twice is little over-reacting ;) That narrow this down to “49 Popular Airline Logos”

      Nice Showcase….

It’s glad to see Vietnam airline logo listed here. 50 Logos are very pretty and it’s so hard to chose one of the best in 50 logos. i love Austrian Logo, British airways logo, Brussels Airlines logo, Quntas Logo, Singapore airlines logo, Spirit airlines… many many of them. But i voted for Qantas Logo

    • Christos

I think the Olympic tail logo should be in here as well, as it is a timeless classic.

    • http://bca.travel Evelyn

Knowing that you are only showing 50 airlines, quite a few are missing – Aer Lingus, ANA, Jet Blue, bmi. Also the South African Airways logo is more than 4 years old. New logo came on in 2005. Also, you show 2 Swiss logos and one is non-existant as well as Varig is gone.

    • http://www.webdesignerdepot.com Walter

I didn’t mean to showcase an updated list of all exisiting logos, so that’s why I’m including some older ones. The list is not meant to be comprehensive.

    • Dave

I think it’s important to point out that some of these logos are obviously Airline logos because they incorporate the shape of the tail or the airplane into the logo. You instinctively and immediately know it’s an airline logo even if you’ve never heard of the company before.

At first glance – Other logos might belong to a football tram, accounting firm, clothing line, beverage or whatever.

hey man where´s mexicana?? do you know that oceanic airlines doesn´t even exist??????

    • http://www.devlindonnelly.com Devlin

Great collection. Including Oceanic Airlines is pretty funny, good logo as well. I didn’t realize Alaska Airlines dropped the Eskimo or it wasn’t apart of the main identity. It seems the common element is the all the logos are pretty upscale and classy. I suppose if you are trusting them with your life you don’t want to fly on an airline that looks cheap.

As for Oceanic, yes, I’m aware of this, it was placed there as a joke (see comments above).

Nice Post. There are many sweet marks above, but i kinda like airberlin best. It has great type, well chosen color (middark red = dynamic, modern, comfortable).

And, just for the braggin rights, I like mexicanair. Just for the mark itself. Type isn’t too cool, though. But i like this.. Native American looking guy -smirk-

      so long,

    • Chantal

It’s all about the KLM! Air France’s latest has a beautiful font.

Also anyone remember the orange CPAir (became Canadian – now done) logo from the 70′s -best.

    • Xenia

Nice picks there. But if you’re including defunct airlines, there are two that are timeless, in my opinion, in design:

#1, Interflug, the former East German airline:
      http://www.raritaetenboerse.com/fotos/interflug-600.jpg

#2, Pan American World Airways, aka Pan Am:

    • http://www.themescrunch.com shahz

Where is Paksitan International Airlines (PIA)? It’s supposed to be pretty easy to make :D

      Malaysia airlines is my favourite..

    • http://www.logoblog.org/ Nora Reed

These are some really well known logos. Airlines especially need to instill trust in their customers and a logo design is a great way to do that.

    • Xenia

In response to Nora Reed’s comment – definitely. And sometimes they really hit the mark, like Pan Am did. Pan Am went out of business probably 15 years ago, yet it’s probably still amongst the most recognised logos out there.

I’m disappointed if the Eskimo gone from Alaska Air. When you arrive at a west coast airport and see that Eskimo on a plane’s tail, you know that plane goes to somewhere interesting. AeroMexico and Hawaiian have the same effect.

Airline logos are perhaps a designers dream since the scope for developing a strong visual brand is enormous. From tickets and luggage tag to tail wings, everything is a billboard.
And by its very nature, airline travel is progressive and lends itself to elegant typographical design.
That’s why I chose an airline theme for my own website, and everyone loves it!

    • Frank

Aer Lingus has a great logo and they have been around forever

Why not use Microsoft or Adobe logo in your airline company’s name? You use stolen logos, flags, history & names anyway, so you can be very radical. Please show respect to other people’s history, make your own ideas. Macedonia is not a country! Now get a grip and keep on reading this great blog!

    • admiral

This is a great place to visit for aviation and plane craze freaks ! The Indian logo is that of a Maharaja (King) in India. India is known for its Kings and Emperors and that is why it has retained the logo of the Maharaja that welcomes its guests into its abode…

    • admiral

I thought Korean Air was there…

    • admiral

Not quite true caitlin (very interesting name btw) each logo quite carries thier national pride and expressess them on the logo. For example, the SouthAfrican airlines, The Qantas etc. I am surprised not to see many airlines not listed on the list such as Eva Air (Taiwanese), South African Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Etihad Airways, Scandinavian (SAS) etc. But nonetheless, its good to see them here…

    • Ben

Where is Joe in Alaska Airlines?

You have a fantastic list here, and a very useful resource that I will surely be linking to in the near future. I found your blog post after researching airline logos, and my research ended immediately when I found your post. I should now find it much easier to have the right logo created for Aeroplanes.com.

“Noteworthy is the lack of any depiction of an airplane in most of these logos, but a tendency to suggest flying through the use of curved shapes that resemble wings.”

That is what I admire the most about some airline logos!

I am trying to identify an airline logo: the logo consists of an outline of a flying lion on all four feet facing right. His tail raises upward in a “S” shape. Surrounding the lion is a frame that looks like a Tudor rose-4 double arches (one each above, below and to each side) separated by triangular “thorns.” Can anyone identify the airline?

      Thanks for suggestions

You’d think, given their disastrous safety record, Oceanic would change their logo (and possibly their name…..)

    • Doug

IMO the best logo is the old logo of JAL Japan Airlines: the crane incorporated with the rising sun was an instant design classic:

Great post, as an airline enthusiast, and having worked for a couple on the list, I can fully appreciate the designs and draw inspiration from them. But, I do have to recognize one that wasn’t on the list that was a joy to work for, and have a great yet simplistic design: http://www.worldairways.com/.

Awesome post. Reading through the comments and it seems there’s a few airlines not included but then thats to be expected. There are a few 100 passenger carrying airlines in the world, not to mention the defunct airlines and freight-only airlines.

    • francisco quintanilla

i really appreciate the effort but u realy missed the newly designed taca logo, let me tell u the airline has really gone under some awesome changes! even the flight attendants’ uniforms are amazing! oh and i do love sri lanka air logo its quite colorful and that is appealing!

    • seba

I think most of logos have weak sense of telling a “story about flying”; they simply don’t translate what they’re supposed to in a visual language.
A lot of them plays on a tune of a wavy line that paraphrises flying and some text, but thats kind of it.

I like the simple idea of transition in TAP airlines logo, or the slickness of technical paraphrasing of dutch airlines, that doesnt go so much with “story about flying” rather than “we are consistent and relieable”, which indirectly works great.

Anyhow, nice collection to see how things with air-company logos are, but i think most of them is very weak.

    • Ziansh

Garuda updated it’s logo.. so much better now. http://www.garuda-indonesia.com/media/images/2009/07/23/G/a/Garuda-Logo-Vertical-1024.jpg

AND.. you must add TACA to this list, its simply the best one out there now!!http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/9/91/TACA_2008_logo.svg/2000px-TACA_2008_logo.svg.png

check out Maldivian’s new logo as well: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/dd/Maldivian_logo.png

    • Ron Pride

I really like the recent suggestion of the TACA logo by Ziansh. That is quite good. The type is a little thin for me—perhaps it needs a slant on it as well—I dunno, maybe not. Anyway, it is nice.

Nice blog, I like the logo of Air India it looks pretty good!

    • Zean

      Best ones:

1)Austrian Airlines – simplicity of flying, gotta love it.
2)SriLankan Airlines – great script and amazing elegant logo
3)Thai Airways – very traditional yet simple :D
      4)LAN – simplicity redefined
5)Ethiopian Airlines – love the concept, very rare
      6)Air Madagascar – cool colour scheme \m/
7)Emirates – great script, one of a kind logo
8)Vietnam Airlines – gotta love the simplicity :)
      9)Air India – warm
10)Singapore Airlines – very “complete”, in my opinion

      Worst ones:

      1) TAP – Looks like the logo of a fashion magazine or a lollypop >.>
      2) NWA – Simplicity gone too far? the old one was genius.
      3) China Airlines – would be very nice if they lost that badly photoshopped flower.
      4) Midwest – congested 101
      5) El Al – really depressive colour scheme. just no.
      6) American Airlines – not that friendly for me
      7) Qantas – like AA, a bit too “pointy” for my tastes. but the kangaroo is A+ :)
      8) Air Berlin – what exactly is that in their new logo? (love the script, hate the logo)
      9) Air Philippines – um.. whats with the full-body mohawk?
10)Tarom – bit old school, eh?

GOOD COLLECTION MAN. I would like to suggest TACA and the new Garuda logo!

    • ALLOT

Compliments pour la qualité de vos superbes logos.
      Michel à Lyon – France.
Sorry i d’ont speak and write a good English.

    • Atharva

      I disagree with this-
“Noteworthy is the lack of any depiction of an airplane in most of these logos, but a tendency to suggest flying through the use of curved shapes that resemble wings.”

Many of the logos do depict tail wings and air-Tran shows a shape that clearly is an airplane. Also many of the logos depict birds that is supposed to be from where humans were influenced to fly and thus create airplanes.

      So, who agrees?

    • kirski

the Oceanic logo looks rather similar to a low cost carrier called Mango…

I recently saw a large plane landing at SFO with a striking design: red and white stripes on the tail, and a large blue roundel with a white star inside, which was on the side near the front of the plane. I didn’t see a name. Can anyone tell me what it was?
